| Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - Lately my mantra has been: "Stay home, make zines." Keeping my hands busy and my mind clear for an hour or so every day with these little things. You can see them all on Twitter or over on Instagram. (If you want to make your own, here's how.)
- Otherwise, I'm muddling through like everybody else. When my plague journal gets too dark, turning to cheerful retrospection. Lowering my expectations. Not thinking about much after dinnertime. Trying to stick to what I know works.
- Ear candy: I've been diving into these epic yearly survey playlists by Fluxblog. I'm on 1974 right now, then I plan on jumping to 1983, then back to 1977. Some of the transitions in the mixes are really breathtaking, like the way Krafterk's "Autobahn" segues into Pink Floyd's "Us and Them." Highly recommended.
- Podcast: Between the Covers, long-form interviews with writers. The two Mary Ruefle episodes are so good. (Here's one and two.) I love her. I'm reading Dunce right now and I'm about to crack open Madness, Rack, and Honey again. (This interview with Ron Charles is really great, too.)
- Good books I read this winter.
- Ryan Holiday interviewed me for the Daily Stoic podcast.
- For those parents who are struggling this week: The best parenting advice I've ever heard. (And some advice for those faced with teaching your kids at home: "Don't try to make it like school.") Feel free to browse my parenting and unschooling tags for project ideas, but also feel free to turn on the goldanged TV or throw them an iPad so you can get something done. (Who needs a drink? Good grief.)
- There's so much live-streaming going on right now, it's impossible to keep track of it all, but the highlights in our house have been Wendy MacNaughton's drawing lessons, Mac Barnett's storytimes, and Mo Willems' Lunch Doodles.
- Netflix: it may be too bleak or vulgar for many of you, but I laughed a lot at Marc Maron's standup special, End Times Fun.
- It's already heavy out there, I'm trying to only weigh in where it counts.
Thanks for reading. This is usually the part where I mention how this newsletter is free, but not cheap, but we've all got enough we're dealing with, just take care of your people and keep going. If you can, consider supporting your local indie bookstore. They are struggling right now. My friends at Bookpeople have all my books in stock, most of them signed, and they are offering free shipping this weekend! If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here. xoxo, Austin | | | |
