Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - The virus is messing with our sense of time.
- I'm reading Zadie Smith's new mini-collection of essays, Intimations, Seymour Papert's The Children's Machine, and Alison Gopnik's The Gardener and The Carpenter.
- I'm in love with quilting.
- Two cool book announcements: Roxane Gay has edited The Selected Works of Audre Lorde and Brian Eno's A Year With Swollen Appendices is finally being reissued. (It's been out-of-print for forever. I put it at the very top of the recommended reading list in Show Your Work!)
- How have I survived a dozen Texas summers without knowing the word "estivate"?
- Tip: next time there's a museum show you're interested in, check the website for a family or classroom guide.
- Podcast: My wife got me hooked on Elizabeth Day's How To Fail. I recommend her interviews with Andrew Scott, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Alain de Botton, and Olivia Laing.
- Poem: "Life, friends, is boring. We must not say so."
- Ear candy: Harry Styles' cover of "Sledgehammer" has me listening to Peter Gabriel's original on repeat. (Did you know The Brothers Quay did some animation work for the video?) I was also inspired to throw together a Spotify playlist of my favorite cuts with The Memphis Horns.
- Aggravation is my muse.
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who'd like it or buy a book or a t-shirt. If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can read previous issues and subscribe here. xoxo, Austin PS. Here's one of my tape quilts: | | | |
