Hey L,
Ever said this?
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m just horny.”
If you have, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s one of the most common things people in recovery say, and it makes sense.
In the moment, the urge feels purely sexual. It feels like a physical need that came out of nowhere and won’t leave you alone.
But most of the time, that’s not the whole story.
This month we’ve been focusing on mental health and how what’s happening in your mind and body is at the heart of recovery. We’ve talked about why you can’t think your way out of a feeling problem and how shame keeps you stuck.
Today we’re looking at something every man and woman in recovery deals with, often daily: urges.
And the goal isn’t to figure out how to fight them harder. It’s to understand what they’re actually trying to tell you.
Here’s the key idea. An urge is how your brain’s desire for something registers in your body.
It’s your brain saying, “I need something, and I need it now.” And what it reaches for depends on what it has learned works. So if you’re stressed, anxious, lonely, or overwhelmed, your brain wants relief.
And, if over time, it has learned that sex is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get that relief, the request shows up as a sexual urge. The need underneath might be comfort, rest, or connection.
But the urge comes out sounding like sex, because that’s the tool your brain knows.
That’s why “I’m just horny” feels true but usually misses the point. The urge is real, but it’s often not really about sex.
It also helps to understand that the urge is usually the last step, not the first. By the time you notice it, something has often been building for hours or even days.
- A tense conversation with your wife.
- A boss who made you feel small.
- A week of bad sleep.
- Hours of scrolling because you felt bored and empty.
Most people focus all their attention on the urge itself and completely miss everything that led up to it. But, when you start looking at what came before, patterns begin to show up.
