Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - I spent several days this week recording an audiobook in my bedroom closet.
- I'm reading a poem from David Berman's Actual Air each morning with my cup of coffee, and The Philosophy of Andy Warhol at the dinner table.
- I read Esther Pearl Watson's Galactic Halo, which collects her paintings and tells the story of her upbringing in rural Texas with an Italian father who built flying saucers in the back yard. (I sent her Ray Bradbury's story, "The Rocket," from his collection The Illustrated Man, which is about a father who builds a rocket in his backyard.)
- I wrote about 31 of my favorite records and made a Spotify playlist of some of the best tracks.
- I felt a little silly buying the Phantom Thread soundtrack on vinyl, but it not only sounds amazing, it came with a booklet of sheet music for some of the score!
- 70 years of IKEA catalogs.
- I cannot believe I had never heard of the "Ramen western" Tampopo, a movie that feels like it was custom-made for me. Loved it.
- Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh almost died from COVID-19.
- RIP actor Chadwick Boseman. (We've lost at least two great young artists to colon cancer this year, including my friend, Jason Polan.) RIP author David Graeber. (Here's his classic essay, "On Bullshit Jobs," which he expanded into a book.) RIP Vulcan Video and I Luv Video. (My city is losing too many of the places which once made it unique.)
- Consider the turtle.
