Hey L,
It's been over two years since we launched Live Free, and more than 10 years that I've served in this area of ministry. Over that time I've read and heard a lot of thoughts on sex, porn, masturbation, and the like.
Some of it's been good. Some of it...well, not so much.
But one thing I've come to realize more and more is that we are not as much in the "recovery" game as we are in the "shame" game.
Yes, we have video workshops.
Yes, we have online communities.
Yes, we have free e-courses and more.
All of these resources are purposed to help people escape the pain of sexual addiction, but more importantly - TO HELP THEM FIND FREEDOM FROM SHAME.
Shame is the real threat.
And no matter what we do to help folks find their way out of sexual brokenness; if we can't help people conquer the shame in their lives surrounding the topics of sex, sexuality, and unwanted sexual behavior, we'll come up short in our efforts.
But that's a lot harder than it may sound.
Because so much about our culture (particularly church culture) reinforces the shame we experience when dealing with these things due to the fact that many of us struggle with talking about sex, sexuality, porn and masturbation in the first place.
This is not the way it should be. It's just the way it is.
And so, when I was approached about writing a book to assist people in the way they handle these conversations, I had to say yes.
Not because I need to add "author" to my byline.
Not because I need recognition.
Not because I'm looking to launch my "speaking career."
But because I've had to walk through so much of this myself and I believe if we can learn how to talk about sex, porn, and masturbation in a healthy and constructive way, we can solve and even bypass so many of the struggles we face in these areas.
