Recovery has a strange blind spot. I say that because while many people can tell you exactly how many hours of sleep they got or how many days they’ve been sober, ask them who actually knows what’s going on with them underneath the surface, and the answer is often nobody.
And that gap is where a lot of healing quietly stalls out.
Because relational wellness might honestly be one of the most overlooked pieces of the whole recovery picture.
Here’s a pattern that shows up over and over with men and women working through compulsive sexual behavior.
The behavior itself usually happens alone. In secret, in isolation, behind a locked door or a private browser tab. So it makes sense that recovery gets treated the same way, like something you white-knuckle through on your own, one private battle of willpower at a time.
But that’s backwards because isolation isn’t just where the behavior happens.
It’s where relapse lives.
Think about the last time you felt truly alone, not just physically by yourself, but disconnected, like nobody really knew what was going on with you.
That feeling didn’t just sit there quietly. Did it? It had real weight. And your nervous system likely looked for a way to relieve that weight, whether that was healthy or not.
And for a lot of people, the behavior started as a way to cope with exactly that feeling.
Loneliness, disconnection, not feeling seen or known. And if isolation is what fed the behavior in the first place, more isolation isn’t going to be the thing that heals it.
Yet that’s exactly what a lot of recovery attempts look like.
